People love Google’s new feature that matches your selfie to a famous painting

Image
Do you look like the Mona Lisa? Or maybe more of an American Gothic? Social media is being flooded with Google’s opinions, at least, as part of a new feature that compares a user’s selfie with the company’s catalog of historical artworks, looking for the just-perfect doppelganger. And the update to the Google Arts & Culture App has catapulted it to the most-downloaded free app on the App Store. It claimed the No. 1 spot in the U.S. on Saturday, according to the app metrics site AppAnnie. How does Google do it? The app uses computer-vision tech to examine what is similar about your face to the thousands of pieces of art that are shared with Google by museums and other institutions. Google says this new feature is merely experimental — the app has been around since 2016.

Australian Open: Bernard Tomic counting his millions slammed by tennis world after qualifying failure

Former world number one Andy Roddick has led a chorus of criticism lobbed at Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic following his remarks at Australian Open qualifying. Tomic, once ranked number 17 in the world but now lagging at 142nd, lost his qualifier against Italian world number 218 Lorenzo Sonego 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 to miss out on a place at the Australian Open. It is the first grand slam event Tomic, 25, has missed in seven years, with his ranking to plummet even further. But asked whether this represented a career crossroads for him, he responded sarcastically to journalists. andyroddick ✔ @andyroddick Maybe stop for a second and think of the millions you’ve left on the table .... https:// twitter.com/7newsadelaide/ status/952390718688968704  … 12:34 AM - Jan 15, 2018   126 126 Replies     431 431 Retweets     2,266 2,266 likes Twitter Ads info and privacy "I just count money, that's all I do. Philipines raises Mayon Volcano threat to critical

Image
The Philippines’ most active volcano Mayon  has come back to life with lava  rising to its crater in a gentle eruption due to which   authorities has prompted to evacuate thousands of villagers. Authorities raised the alert level at the Mayon volcano to “level 3” on Sunday after detecting lava flow and indications of activity that could lead to eruptions of magma. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned late on Sunday that a “hazardous eruption” of Mount Mayon was possible within weeks or even days. The 2,460-metre (8,070-ft) volcano is located in Albay province in the north-eastern  Philippines . According to sources  three steam-explosions by the volcano since Saturday have spewed ash into nearby villages and may have breached solidified lava at the crater and caused lava to start to flow out. Disaster response officials said nearly 1,000 families had been moved to emergency shelters. Authorities advised people to cover their mouths and no

Tata X451 Price features and specification detailed discussion

TataX451 Estimated price: ₹ 8 Lakhs X451 Review Tata Motors is on a path of transformation. The Indian carmaker wants to move away from its old-school rickety style to a modern marquee. And the shift is underway with the introduction of successful products like the Tiago and Nexon. Now Tata is working on an all-new premium hatchback which is codenamed ‘Project X451’. The premium hatchback will be showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo at least in the concept guise. The all-new hatchback will be the first car to be built on the Advanced Modular Platform (AMP) that has been developed by Tata Motors. Looking at the images that we have at our disposal, it is evident that the X451 will be styled quite similar to the Tiago, but we hope it gets some brawn from the Hexa as well. In terms of size, the X451 is visually longer than the Tiago but Tata will certainly not go over four metres in length to benefit from the tax regulations. Tata’s first AMP-based car is expected to debut in late

Massive deep deposits of ice found on Mars. Possibilities of Life?

Image
Massive, deep deposits of ice found on Mars Researchers studying the eroded edges of ridges on Mars have found that substantial deposits of water ice exist just a few feet below martian surface, reaching over 300 feet thick in some areas. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured this astonishing image showing an avalanche of dusty snow racing down the weakened side of an eroded slope on Mars. In this image, the snow is made up of dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide); however, researchers recently found similar slopes elsewhere on Mars with massive deposits of pure water ice. Despite the fact that Mars has an atmosphere just 1% as dense as Earth’s, the surface of the Red Planet still has to deal with plenty of weathering and erosion. In 2008, researchers even captured a full-scale avalanche on Mars as it plunged down a 2,300-foot slope into a valley. These types of geological events often expose the structures beneath the martian surface, revealing layers of rock, dry ice, and ev

How Israel is helping India in agriculture

Image
India and Israel are set to jointly develop new crop varieties and share post harvest technologies following the success of the 10-year-old Indo-Israeli Agriculture Project whose accomplishments include growing cherry tomatoes in Haryana, rejuvenating mango orchards in Maharashtra and demonstrating to Indian farmers the effectiveness of state-of-the-art irrigation technologies. For a country like Israel where 60% of the area is desert, exporting high-value farm produce like mangoes and avocados is a matter of pride, whereas for India, among the largest food producers globally, the challenge is to counter the effects of erratic rainfall, raise productivity and use water efficiently. So, it was with the objective of sharing best practices and technical knowledge from Israel that the agriculture cooperation project was launched in 2008. The implementing partners for the project are the National Horticulture Mission under the agriculture ministry, MASHAV, Israel’s agency for interna

Strange spectacular sky spirals seen in the night sky.....

Image
A pair of spectacular images of an ethereal spiral in the night sky may show the upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket after it launched a secret satellite for the U.S. government on Sunday night (January 7). The photos show a brilliant spiral that appeared in the night sky shortly after a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched the Zuma satellite on a mystery mission for the U.S. government. Some media reports, citing anonymous government officials, have reported that the Northrop Grumman-built Zuma spacecraft may have failed after it launched into orbit. SpaceX representatives have said their Falcon 9 rocket performed as expected during the Zuma launch. A Northrop Grumman representative said the company cannot comment on the mission due to its classified nature.

Intel CEO talks about immersive media concepts using arrays of Intel pow...

People in entertainment industry had been using tech like virtual reality, 3D and high-resolution displays. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich on Monday said that he plans to take those ideas a step further during a keynote speech at the CES tech show in Las Vegas. He presented a handful of immersive media concepts using arrays of Intel-powered cameras to capture much more of a scene or sports field. "It's going to transform the consumer experience in almost every area: retail, travel, advertising, entertainment, education, even medicine," he said of immersive media. "The real opportunity is to use data to produce and delivery the most immersive, realistic content possible." While these concepts will likely require enormous amounts of computational power and likely result in higher production costs, they have the potential for changing how we experience movies and sports, and could provide filmmakers with new ways for telling stories. Krzanich showed a packed cr

Honduras hit by Major Earthquake

Honduras hit by major earthquake Update: No Tsunami threat A 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit north of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea at a depth of 10 km on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). ONE of the strongest earthquakes to hit the Caribbean in years struck off the coast of Honduras this afternoon, shaking the mainland and sparking tsunami fears. Tsunami fears were cancelled about an hour after they were issued and there have been no reports of serious damage or deaths. The depth of the quake was 10km which would have amplified its effect. It was initially recorded as a 7.8 magnitude, but then downgraded to 7.6 by USGS. The tsunami advisory was in effect for Puerto Rico and the US. Virgin Islands, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The quake rattled windows in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa about 520km to the east, but no damage was immediately reported. Samsung has rocked CES 2018 with an enormous 4K TV The Wall which it claims “the world’s first modular TV.” The Wall measures 146 inches and uses MicroLED technology to produce its picture. MicroLED shares many benefits with OLED; each microscopic LED can emit its own light — no backlight is required — and that creates the deep blacks and lush colors normally reserved for OLED sets. It also gets incredibly bright. The wall has a bezel-less design that Samsung describes as “module-based.” Samsung says this approach will ultimately allow customers to create a TV sized just for their needs. The company isn’t yet revealing many specifics on how that will work, however, only saying ”the modular screen can be used to create a wall-sized display, or simply let consumers increase their traditional screen size to suit a new room in the home.” Samsung wouldn’t even specify how many modules were in the concept set shown at tonight’s First Look event in Las Vegas. Huawei CEO delivers one of the best speech at CES2018

Image
Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei’s consumer products division, deivered one of the best speech at CES 2018. He was  mumbling  stammerring , hesitating, and was  uncomfortable on stage. Part of his discomfort could probably be explained by AT&T’s last-minute  decision to pull out of a deal to sell Huawei’s phones in the US . This was supposed to be Huawei’s big moment in the American spotlight, and AT&T pulled the rug out from under the Chinese company. Reports indicate that the carrier’s decision was driven by political pressure within the US, with apparent  concern about Chinese espionage  — and Huawei’s particular role in that — underlying the whole thing. The Huawei boss did something unexpected at the end of his keynote . Framed by a simple slide reading “Something I Want to Share,” Yu proceeded to address the failure of Huawei’s carrier deal directly. Shedding the earlier hesitation in his speech, he made the point that American phone buyers can’t have the best and wides
