Nick Saban Nick Saban Announces Retirement after 17 Seasons at Alabama TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama's Nick Saban, who has won more college football national championships than any coach in the modern era, announced his retirement on Wednesday. "The University of Alabama has been a very special place to Terry and me," Saban said. "We have enjoyed every minute of our 17 years being the head coach at Alabama as well as becoming a part of the Tuscaloosa community. It is not just about how many games we won and lost, but it's about the legacy and how we went about it. We always tried to do it the right way. The goal was always to help players create more value for their future, be the best player they could be and be more successful in life because they were part of the program. Hopefully, we have done that, and we will always consider Alabama our home." <> Saban spent 28 years as a college head coach at Toledo (1990), Michigan State (1995-99), LSU (2

Chris Christie ends campaign: Trump, candidates, voters react

Image
Following former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's announcement Wednesday that he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential race, reaction soon poured in from his supporters and political rivals, including former President Donald Trump, who Christie vehemently campaigned against. "I hear Chris Christie is dropping out of the race today — I might even get to like him again!" Trump posted on Truth Social shortly after Christie announced the news. Among the Republican candidates, the former New Jersey governor was perhaps the most outspoken against Trump. Christie centered his campaign on defeating the former president and wasn't shy about calling him out, including for his election denialism, mounting legal woes and involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection. However, Christie was once a Trump supporter -- endorsing him in the 2016 presidential race after he suspended his own campaign. During his presidency, Trump appointed Christie chair of the President

5 takeaways from the Republican debate with Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis clashed on Wednesday night at their first one-on-one debate of the 2024 Republican primary. The two, who both trail former President Donald Trump nationally and in early primary states, according to 538's polling average, engaged in frequently testy exchanges on their records in government and on an array of policy stances at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, the state that will host closely watched caucuses on Monday. Here are five takeaways from Wednesday night's debate. Trump on the back burner, with some exceptions Trump maintains double-digit leads nationally and in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina -- three early voting states in the race -- making him the candidate to beat. On Wednesday, he often barely got a mention except on a few key issues. In a continuation of a monthslong trend, Haley and DeSantis, vying to be No. 2 to Trump in the polls, instead focused their fire on each other

This 2024 presidential election could change the world – and it’s not happening in the US

This 2024 presidential election could change the world – and it’s not happening in the US A presidential election in 2024 with profound implications for the wider world certainly sounds familiar. But this one is happening a lot sooner than you might think. Taiwan, a small and vibrant Asian democracy on the doorstep of a much larger authoritarian neighbor, holds presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday and the results will reverberate far beyond its borders. The outcome is being closely watched by China’s Communist leaders who have long claimed Taiwan as part of their territory despite having never controlled it. The vast majority of people in Taiwan don’t want to be ruled by China, whose strongman leader Xi Jinping has tightened his grip at home as the country becomes more aggressive towards its neighbors.

Trump can’t speak during closing arguments in NY civil fraud trial, judge says

On a Wednesday Judge Arthur Engoron said he does not expect Donald Trump to speak during closing arguments in the $370 million New York civil fraud trial against Trump.   In a letter to attorneys for Trump and New York Attorney General Letitia James just after noon Wednesday, Engoron said that Trump hasn’t agreed to conditions he set should the former president wish to give a statement. “Not having heard from you by the third extended deadline (noon today), I assume that Mr. Trump will not agree to the reasonable, lawful limits I have imposed as a precondition to giving a closing statement above and beyond those given by his attorneys, and that, therefore, he will not be speaking in court tomorrow,” Engoron wrote. Email correspondence shows the parties have been discussing the possibility of Trump participating in the closing arguments since at least last week. Trump and his team have used his court appearances to claim election interference by Joe Biden, paint his legal woes as

China claims it has cracked Apple AirDrop’s encryption to identify senders

A Chinese tech company has succeeded in cracking the encryption around Apple’s AirDrop wireless file sharing function to identify users of the popular feature, according to judicial authorities in Beijing. The company, Wangshendongjian Technology, was able to help police track down people who used the service to send “inappropriate information” to passersby in the Beijing subway, the city’s Justice Bureau said in a Monday statement. It had identified the senders’ mobile phone numbers and email addresses as part of an investigation following a complaint, the department said. Several suspects had been identified, it said, without giving details about the nature of the messages. AirDrop has been blamed for nuisance messages received by some commuters on subways and buses in Chinese cities. The popular wireless file sharing function was also reportedly used by protesters to spread anonymous messages critical of the Chinese government in the last few months of 2022.
